Letztes Update: 28. September 2023
Other smartphone banks have had it for a long time, and now neon is following suit and launching neon metal. For CHF 15 per month, there are lots of insurances in addition to the account known from neon free, which are unlocked as soon as you reach a certain spending threshold with the neon metal card – gamification says hello. Everything else you need to know about neon metal can be found in this article.
Banking
neon free can already do a lot, as you can read here. And neon green is not without its own. In addition to the features of neon free, neon metal offers free cash withdrawals abroad for CHF 15 per month. The otherwise applicable fee of 1.5% on the Mastercard reference rate is therefore omitted.
Some ATMs abroad charge a fixed fee, neon has no influence on this. These also apply to a neon metal account. So look for ATMs that don’t charge a fixed fee to withdraw. Most often, these are ATMs of large banks. Small insertion: In Greece I have not found an ATM without a fee.
In addition, with neon you should always withdraw cash in the local currency. The ATM usually asks you friendly (or rather pushy) if he should not convert for you in Swiss francs, he has particularly good rates. This is mostly a bold faced lie, the courses are disastrous! So better let neon do the conversion for you.
In Switzerland, neon metal allows you to withdraw cash free of charge from an ATM not just twice, but five times per month. After that, a cover costs CHF 2.
And yes, there is – after the neon green card made of wood – with neon metal the card of course in chic full metal. It weighs 22g, which is slightly more than four times the weight of a plastic card.
You can easily switch to neon metal in the app. Once you have chosen this account, you must stay with neon metal for one year. After that, you can switch to another account at any time. You may keep the metal card until it expires.
Insurances
As an insurance partner, neon relies on the Europäische Reiseversicherung ERV. ERV is a branch of the Swiss insurance group Helvetia. The other insurance carrier is Allianz and the cell phone insurance is from Helvetic Warranty.
When activating neon metal, the following insurances are already activated:
- Cell phone insurance
- Warranty extension for your electronic devices by three years (as with neon green)
- Best price guarantee
- a ticket insurance
If you spend CHF 500 with your metal card during the entire term of neon metal, you will also get the “Shopping Package” unlocked, which includes the following add-ons:
- Return of goods insurance
- Online purchase protection
- Purchase insurance
You will get the next package if you spend CHF 5’000. It is called “Cyber Package” and includes:
- Online legal protection
- Online account protection
We continue with the “travel package”. This is activated from CHF 15,000 and includes the following insurances:
- Search, recovery and transport
- Doctor and hospital costs worldwide
- Cancellation, flight delay and for your luggage
In the neon app you always have an overview of which level you are currently on. You can find all details about the different insurances here.
Hopefully, the claims reporting process can be handled more digitally in the future. Currently, PDF forms must be filled out for most claims.
Conclusion neon metal
In this post, I’ll spare you all the deductibles, minimums, maximums, number of claims, waiting periods before coverage begins, etc. of each insurance.
You hear certain reservations on my part? Heard correctly. If neon free is nice and simple, neon metal is ominously approaching a CS Bonviva world with x-page factsheet. Well, at least neon spares you with a premium world.
That sounds a bit negative. It shouldn’t: If you’re often abroad, want an almost worry-free all-round insurance package with attractive benefits and a chic card made of metal, you’re in very good hands with neon metal.
