I tend to be skeptical when it comes to insurance. I think cell phone insurance, life insurance with a savings component and fair weather insurance (they really do exist!) are nonsensical in most cases. However, insurance for larger sums, such as pure death cover, can be very useful. And I have changed my mind about legal expenses insurance in recent years. In Switzerland, we are operating in an increasingly complex legal landscape in which it is becoming more and more difficult for laypeople to maintain an overview. A study recently showed that one new law comes into force every year and eight new ordinances are added every year. And legal disputes can be very expensive. So we are talking about large sums of money here too. So it’s time to take a closer look at my Emilia legal protection experience.

What is legal protection insurance?
Legal expenses insurance is insurance that covers the costs of legal disputes. It covers legal fees, court costs and other costs that may arise in connection with a legal dispute. In addition, most legal expenses insurance policies offer advice on legal issues or legal disputes.
Let’s look at two specific examples where my legal expenses insurance has helped me.
Protection in professional life
As you may know, I’m also an actor. In one film, my contract gave me the right to dub myself in the common languages. The film was actually dubbed from Swiss German into German. However, the international film distributor insisted that the same dubbing actor who spoke the role in the series should also be heard in the film. So I contacted my legal expenses insurance company and asked for legal advice on the conditions under which I should waive the right to dub myself and whether I could negotiate compensation in return.
Or another example: I reduced my workload with an employer and was not sure how to deal with vacation days not yet taken if I reduced my workload during the year. The legal protection insurance also advised me on employment law issues.
Legal expenses insurance therefore also provides advice on everyday issues without the need for court proceedings with high legal fees.
Security of tenancy
The reference interest rate has already been increased twice in recent years. Our landlord has taken this as an opportunity to increase the rent. We were correctly informed of the increase on a form approved by the canton. However, we did not agree with the general cost increases claimed therein and contested the increase within 30 days by registered letter to the arbitration authority.
The arbitration authorities are currently heavily overloaded, so the arbitration hearing was only scheduled six months after the challenge. Important to know: As long as arbitration proceedings are ongoing, the old rent continues to apply. The property management company nevertheless sent us a reminder with a threat of termination because the pending arbitration proceedings had probably not been entered correctly in the system. We initially swallowed empty-handed. However, after consulting the lawyer for our legal expenses insurance, the property management withdrew the reminder with the threat of termination.
As you can see, it can get pretty complicated and it’s reassuring to have a professional at your side. A lawyer from the legal expenses insurance company accompanied us throughout the entire contestation procedure, proofread and prepared the letters to the conciliation authority and the landlord, contacted the landlord, answered all our questions, assessed the prospects of success and discussed the next steps.
Conclusion Emilia legal protection experience: Comprehensive protection
In an increasingly complex legal landscape, it is becoming more and more difficult for laypeople to keep track of things. In addition, legal disputes can quickly lead to high costs, which is why I decided to take out legal protection insurance. This covers the costs of lawyers and court proceedings and also offers legal advice. Legal expenses insurance therefore not only offers valuable support in the event of major legal disputes, but also in everyday situations, such as employment and tenancy law issues. Legal protection insurance like Emilia thus offers security and protection in everyday life.
In many cases, simply referring to legal expenses insurance can help with legal disputes. The other side then knows that you won’t give up so easily with this support and are more willing to take legal action. Legal expenses insurance therefore considerably strengthens your own negotiating position.
