Letztes Update: 3. September 2024
I don’t want to deal with regular costs for insurance or subscriptions for streaming services, TV, Internet and mobile communications all the time, but every now and then it’s worth looking for cheaper offers. In this article, you can read about my experiences with GoMo+, the mobile provider that currently offers the cheapest Swiss subscription – even with 5G and 3 GB roaming in Europe.
GoMo
GoMo is a brand name of Salt Mobile S.A. and was launched in mid-November 2021. Salt (previously Orange) has been operating its own mobile network in Switzerland since 1999 and has also been offering Internet, TV and fixed network via fiber optics since 2018. Salt is owned by entrepreneur Xavier Niel. The latter launched GoMo in Ireland as early as 2019.
GoMo+ price
The first 50,000 customers paid just CHF 9.95 per month for GoMo for the rest of their lives. From October 1, 2023, the subscription cost CHF 12.95. Since September 1, 2024, only GoMo+ has been available for CHF 14.95 per month. This subscription also includes 3 GB roaming in Europe. This price is also valid for life.
The activation costs of CHF 39.95, which include a SIM card, do not apply at the moment. The identity check by post costs CHF 19.95. The minimum subscription period is only one month. You can then cancel with 30 days’ notice to the end of a billing period. The cancellation has to be made by chat.
You can pay by credit card (Mastercard, Visa), TWINT, PostFinance card, direct debit and eBill. To do this, select “Salt Mobile” as the provider in eBill and enter the billing account and reference number. You can find both in your GoMo account under “Invoices”.
If you would like to have the invoice sent physically to your home, this costs CHF 2.95 per month. By default, you will receive them free of charge by e-mail. Please note that the first reminder already costs CHF 30.
When traveling, GoMo+ is not quite as attractive, but not overly expensive either: Calls to neighboring countries or abroad cost CHF 0.45 per minute, for example. SMS and MMS cost CHF 0.25, which is a very competitive price. 3 GB of mobile data is now included in other European countries. After that, there are data packages that can be booked in addition. For Europe, for example, 1 GB costs CHF 9.95. I have already described how to find cheap data roaming tariffs with eSIM providers in another article. You can find all other zones and their tariffs in the GoMo factsheet.
GoMo+ inclusive services
Unlimited calls to all Swiss networks are included in the subscription. Calls to special and short numbers cost extra, of course. You can send unlimited SMS within Switzerland. And the data volume on Salt’s 4G+ and 5G/5G+ network (up to 1.7 Gbits/s) is also unlimited. You can find Salt’s network coverage map here.
GoMo’s usage policy governs “normal use”. Among other things, the use of the services in special applications such as WLAN hotspots is excluded there. This refers to the use of the SIM card as a hotspot in a mobile WiFi device (surf stick, router, etc.), which is prohibited. What is permitted is sharing the connection, such as setting up a personal hotspot with the smartphone in order to surf on the train with the laptop.
GoMo+ online registration
Of course you can keep your current number and port it to GoMo. Ordering a GoMo+ Mobile subscription, including verifying your identity, is easy and straightforward online. You will need a smartphone and an identity document. You photograph this and then create a video recording of your face. You can find out which smartphones are compatible on the GoMo help page.
You will receive the contract by e-mail after verification of your identity. In your MyGoMo account, this is also accessible at any time.
GoMo+ customer service experience
You can reach the customer service exclusively via chat on the GoMo website. You cannot reach GoMo by phone, e-mail or letter. As already mentioned, notice of termination must be given via chat. The chat is only available from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 18:00.
Critical comments about porting can be read on the Internet. Likewise, communication via chat is not always easy. In my case, the porting worked on time and without any problems at the end of December 2021. And my questions have so far always been answered in a friendly manner and without waiting times.
By the way: Anyone who has a dispute with a mobile communications provider can contact the telecommunications arbitration board ombudscom. The handling fee per conciliation procedure is CHF 20.
GoMo account
Several settings are to be made independently in your GoMo account. For example, you can change the roaming limit, customize the payment method, view the payment and usage history, get detailed PDF invoices or view the PIN and PUK code of your SIM card. In case of theft or loss, you can block your connection completely.
To block access to all services with adult content
via your connection (regardless of the service provider), send BLOCK ADULT to 5155.
To block all premium services through your connection (regardless of the type of service and service provider)send BLOCK ALL to 5155.
Note: After that, you will no longer be able to use premium services with your cell phone and you will no longer be able to use your cell phone to pay for services (e.g. Selecta vending machine, parking tickets, etc.). Unfortunately, you will not receive a confirmation and you will not be able to view or make these settings in your GoMo account.
By default, all marketing and privacy settings are enabled. However, you can disable it in your GoMo account. To do this, click on your email address in the top right corner, “My Profile” and then “Marketing Settings” or “Privacy”.
Conclusion GoMo+ experiences and GoMo alternatives
GoMo+ is clearly aimed at a cost-conscious, digitally savvy clientele. GoMo+ is an uncomplicated and streamlined mobile subscription for anyone who has no problem with the limited access to customer service.
If you are looking for a subscription that is not quite as basic as GoMo+, you can find the best mobile subscription offers from Swisscom, UPC, Sunrise, Salt, Wingo, Yallo, Quickline and M-Budget Mobile in a clear comparison at Alao*. Identification takes place digitally, and for many subscriptions, activation is even free when purchased through Alao*. This way you can save up to CHF 60.
swype experience
For digitally savvy customers swype Swiss* with unlimited calls, SMS/MMS and Internet in Switzerland for CHF 19.95 per month could also be attractive. swype uses the Sunrise network and you can set up the eSIM directly in the app. Roaming options are available for CHF 3 per day. You do not pay any activation fees. Have you had any experience with swype? Then share them below in the comments.
Wingo experience
If you prefer to use the Swisscom mobile network, Wingo* is an interesting alternative to GoMo+. Particularly attractive are the regular promotions, whose prices are valid for life and are also available to existing customers. The activation costs are CHF 59. There is only a minimum contract period for the special offers, the regular notice period for a Wingo Mobile subscription is two months to the end of the month.
One small point of criticism: the large number of mobile subscriptions on offer is now almost unmanageable and most subscriptions incur additional costs for surfing with 5G. However, the myWingo customer portal is very powerful and clearly laid out. Please note that the hotline costs CHF 1.50 per minute, up to a maximum of CHF 15. You can also use the contact form or send Wingo a message on WhatsApp.
Wingo is also broadly positioned in the home Internet sector and offers very interesting price options. I myself use Wingo Internet Start* and have only had positive experiences.
MUCHO Mobile experience
Are you looking for a low-cost provider with excellent network coverage on the Swisscom mobile network? Then MUCHO Mobile is the right place for you. The activation fee is a one-off CHF 35. There is no minimum contract term and you can cancel at the end of the month with a 60-day notice period. Another advantage: the discounts on offer are valid for life. Payments can only be made by credit card.
