GoMo: Experiences with the cheapest mobile provider in Switzerland

Letztes Update: 20. October 2023

I don’t want to deal with regular costs for insurance or subscriptions for streaming services, TV, Internet and mobile communications all the time, but every now and then it’s worth looking for cheaper offers. In this post you can read about my experience with the mobile provider GoMo, which currently offers the cheapest subscription – even with 5G – in Switzerland.

GoMo

GoMo is a brand name of Salt Mobile S.A. and was launched in mid-November 2021. Salt (previously Orange) has been operating its own mobile network in Switzerland since 1999 and has also been offering Internet, TV and fixed network via fiber optics since 2018. Salt is owned by entrepreneur Xavier Niel. The latter launched GoMo in Ireland as early as 2019.

Price

The first 50,000 customers pay only CHF 9.95 per month for life. From October 1, 2023, the subscription will cost CHF 12.95. This price is also valid for life.

The activation costs, which include a SIM card, are a one-time charge of CHF 39.95. There is no minimum subscription period at GoMo fortschrittlicherweise. You can cancel at the end of a billing period with 30 days notice. The cancellation has to be made by chat.

You can pay by credit card (Mastercard, Visa), TWINT, PostFinance card, direct debit and eBill. To do this, select “Salt Mobile” as the provider in eBill and enter the billing account and reference number. You can find both in your GoMo account under “Invoices”.

GoMo eBill

If you would like to have the invoice sent physically to your home, this costs CHF 2.95 per month. A detailed invoice costs even CHF 5.00. By default, you will receive them free of charge by e-mail.

When traveling, GoMo is not quite as attractive, but it is not overly expensive either: Calls to neighboring countries or abroad, for example, cost CHF 0.45 per minute. SMS and MMS cost CHF 0.25, which is a very competitive price. Mobile data costs CHF 0.025 per MB. At the parent brand Salt, one MB without a roaming package costs an expensive CHF 2.95. The cheapest way to surf abroad is to use an eSIM provider and set the roaming limit to zero francs under MyGoMo, “Account details” and “Roaming & services”. I’ve described how you can find cheap data roaming rates here. All other zones and their tariffs can be found in the tariff overview of GoMo.

Included services

Unlimited calls to all Swiss networks are included in the subscription. Calls to special and short numbers cost extra, of course. You can send unlimited SMS within Switzerland. And the data volume on Salt’s 4G+ and 5G/5G+ network (up to 1.7 Gbits/s) is also unlimited. You can find Salt’s network coverage map here.

GoMo’s usage policy governs “normal use”. Among other things, the use of the services in special applications such as WLAN hotspots is excluded there. This refers to the use of the SIM card as a hotspot in a mobile WiFi device (surf stick, router, etc.), which is prohibited. What is permitted is sharing the connection, such as setting up a personal hotspot with the smartphone in order to surf on the train with the laptop.

Online registration

Of course you can keep your current number and port it to GoMo. Ordering the GoMo Mobile subscription, including verification of your identity, is easy and straightforward online. You will need a smartphone and an identity document. You photograph this and then create a video recording of your face. You can find out which smartphones are compatible on the GoMo help page.

You will receive the contract by e-mail after verification of your identity. In your MyGoMo account, this is also accessible at any time.

GoMo Experience Customer Service

You can reach the customer service exclusively via chat on the GoMo website. You cannot reach GoMo by phone, e-mail or letter. As already mentioned, the cancellation has to be made by chat. The chat is only available from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 18:00.

Critical comments about porting can be read on the Internet. Likewise, communication via chat is not always easy. In my case, the porting worked on time and without any problems at the end of December 2021. And my questions have so far always been answered in a friendly manner and without waiting times.

By the way: Anyone who has a dispute with a mobile communications provider can contact the telecommunications arbitration board ombudscom. The handling fee per conciliation procedure is CHF 20.

GoMo account

Several settings are to be made independently in your GoMo account. For example, you can change the roaming limit, customize the payment method, view the payment and usage history, get detailed PDF invoices or view the PIN and PUK code of your SIM card. In case of theft or loss, you can block your connection completely.

GoMo Switzerland Account

To block access to all services with adult content
via your connection (regardless of the service provider) you send BLOCK ADULT to 5155.

To block all premium services through your connection (regardless of the type of service and service provider)send BLOCK ALL to 5155.

Note: After that, you will no longer be able to use premium services with your cell phone and you will no longer be able to use your cell phone to pay for services (e.g. Selecta vending machine, parking tickets, etc.). Unfortunately, you will not receive a confirmation and you will not be able to view or make these settings in your GoMo account.

By default, all marketing and privacy settings are enabled. However, you can disable it in your GoMo account. To do this, click on your email address in the top right corner, “My Profile” and then “Marketing Settings” or “Privacy”.
