Letztes Update: 10. July 2024
Internet providers are always outbidding each other with promotions, and the fall of 2022 is no exception. That’s when an ad caught my eye, touting yallo Home Max Cable for life for CHF 19.95 a month. Naturally, I wanted to try it out and started surfing with yallo Home Max Cable* in December 2022. Read my yallo Home Max Cable experience to find out what the Sunrise subsidiary’s offer is worth.
Transparency note: As I have recently become dependent on Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) for my home office – which yallo does not offer – I had to leave the contract prematurely and am now with Wingo*. The switch had nothing to do with yallo, I never had any problems and was always satisfied.
About yallo
yallo is a subsidiary of Sunrise and has been active in the mobile communications business since 2005. Sunrise, in turn, belongs to Liberty Global, an international media group and one of the world’s largest broadband providers. Sunrise also owns the Lebara, UPC and Swype brands. In addition, wilmaa.com merged into yallo TV at the end of 2022.
For a long time, yallo only offered its subscriptions via the Internet. In the meantime, there are also yallo stores where you can get on-site advice. You can find the exact locations on the yallo website.
Very pleasant: So far, I have not received a call asking if I would like to buy another product to go with my subscription to yallo. As we know, this is often the case with other providers.
yallo Home Max Cable
With yallo Home Max Cable, you get up to 1 Gbps download speed, up to 100 Mbps upload speed, and a cable router with dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz/5 GHz) on loan. The minimum contract period is 24 months, after which it can be terminated with two months’ notice to the end of the month. Notice must be given either by chat or by telephone. Both the chat and the cancellation hotline are free of charge.
To use yallo Home Max Cable at home, you need a cable socket. To find out if yallo Home Max Cable is available in your area, visit the yallo website*.
yallo Home Max Cable – Price
The normal price for yallo Home Max Cable is CHF 80 per month, although there are always promotions. For example, I pay CHF 19.95 for the same subscription.
The Internet subscription is also available in combination with TV. It is then called yallo Home Max Cable +TV and costs CHF 100. With it, you can watch over 270 channels and use the 7-day replay function. But since I don’t have a TV, I don’t need the additional TV option.
The activation fee for yallo Internet Home is really expensive and costs CHF 99. It will be charged to you with the first invoice. Here, too, there are always promotions where the activation fee is waived.
Remember: If you change your cell phone subscription and take your number with you, you don’t have to cancel your old provider. It’s different for Internet at home: You have to cancel the contract with your old provider yourself.
yallo Home Max Cable – Installation
The installation of the yallo Home Cable Box is very simple. Yallo promises plug & play, and it is. You connect the supplied cable to the Home Cable Box and plug it into the cable socket. Then connect the power supply and the Home Cable Box will start to connect. As soon as the white LED lights up constantly, the connection is established. It didn’t take 10 minutes for me.
On the bottom of the Home Cable Box you will find the WiFi network name and the WiFi password. And you’re ready to surf.
yallo Home Cable Box
You can personalize the yallo Home Cable Box by entering 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your Internet browser. Of course, you need to be connected to the yallo Home Cable Box, either via LAN cable or WiFi. You can also find the “Settings password” on the bottom of the yallo Home Cable Box.
Here you can also disable the 2.4 GHz frequency band and the 5 GHz frequency band individually. Automatic night shutdown is not possible.
If you don’t like the LED light ring of the yallo Home Cable Box, you can dim it or turn it off completely under “Advanced settings” and “Light ring”. If the box cannot establish a connection or if there is another fault, the light ring is automatically reactivated.
The WiFi signal strength of the yallo Home Cable Box is acceptable, but nothing more. To be able to surf wirelessly throughout the apartment, I had to buy a range extender. Simple models cost around CHF 50. Some more expensive Internet providers provide repeaters for free, with yallo you have to take care of it yourself.
By the way, you cannot use your own router with yallo Home Cable. This is because the bridge mode requires the IPv4 protocol, which is not possible with the yallo Home Cable Box.
yallo customer service
You can only reach yallo via chat or telephone. The chat is often overloaded and then simply refers to the hotline, which costs CHF 1.50 per call (cancellations are free), but is at least also available on weekends.
I was overcharged by one month when I switched from UPC to yallo. I was able to enter this in the chat and received an email from a yallo employee one day later, who credited the amount to my next bill without any complications.
my yallo app
For users who only have an Internet subscription, the my yallo app is uninteresting. You can view the invoices and change the billing settings, but that’s about it. Customers with a mobile subscription can also view their current consumption and purchase additional options. Incidentally, paper bills cost CHF 4 per month. Customer-friendly is that free invoicing by e-mail is set by default. I opted for the invoice via eBill.
You can also make the same settings on the yallo website. You enter your email address and receive a login code that is valid for five minutes.
Tips – cheap internet for home Switzerland
- You see an advertisement for a cheap Internet or cell phone subscription, but it’s only available to new customers? Call the provider and say you want to take advantage of it too, because otherwise you’ll switch to the competition. That often works – I once worked for a telecommunications provider myself. It works best if you know the price and performance of a low-cost competing product.
- Make sure the discount is for life, or you’ll have to start over after a year or two.
- Beware of long minimum contract terms. This often ties you to one provider for an unnecessarily long time.
Conclusion – yallo Home Max Cable experience
For the full price of CHF 79, I find yallo Home Max Cable way too expensive.
However, if you take out yallo Home Max Cable as part of a promotion, the cheapest Internet in Switzerland can be quite attractive for standard users. However, the setting options of the yallo Home Cable Box are very limited, as described above. For example, it is not possible to access your resources (server, NAS, etc.) from “outside”.
